Regional governments can levy taxes on specified items (e.g. paddy, petroleum products) and some commercial activities. Township authorities collect municipal fees and rates. The Internal Revenue Department (IRD) and Myanmar Customs are national. Since the 2021 coup, tax collection and compliance have been severely disrupted. Many businesses operate in shadow economy; FDI has largely fled.
